Vocabulary Charades
When?
This activity could be done as a whole class when there is a spare few minutes before specials, or in small groups during centers. It would be great as review, if past words were included in the choices. Spelling words could also be used.
How?
Materials?
Why?
Playing Charades is a fun and active way to learn. The kinesthetic aspect will help students to remember, especially if they created the physical definition. Also, acting out a word is reminiscent of total physical response method of learning a second language.

How?
- The teacher selects the vocabulary words for the session. Words should be written on index cards so that they could be drawn from a bag.
- Students will be divided into at least two groups.
- Students may work together to draw from a bag and define words with their bodies. For example, students may make a face to define the word "disgusting".
- The charade will be presented to the other groups, and they will have to guess the word. If spelling words are used, the guesser will also have to spell the word he or she is guessing. The list of words should be known or even provided before-hand, otherwise it may be too difficult.
- Once used, the words could be placed back in the bag to be drawn again, so that the word is repeated for all students.
- Teams could also switch words to define them with their own charades.
- Teams who guess the most charades correctly, wins points
